My research interests focus on developing ways to promote improved developmental outcomes for young children who are considered “at risk” for later academic and behavioral problems. Most of my work focuses on preschool and very early elementary students; in particular, my colleagues and I are interested in language and literacy development, social competence, and the design and evaluation of interventions and programs that promote children’s success in preschool and early elementary school.

I have worked for some years to adapt the logic of Curriculum-Based Measurement to early childhood populations. My colleagues and I have developed a set of Individual Growth and Development Indicators for preschool-aged children; these measues link, in turn, to similar measures for infants and toddlers and for kindergartners and elementary students. I am excited to extend this work into the seamless system of progress monitoring being developed by RIPM.
